Re: Days of Fun and Games with V5R3

I was lucky - V5R3 was pre-installed on the 520 I use.

Haven't upgraded to V5R3 from V5R2 (yet).

When we IPL:ed the new 520 (as shipped), we did get "Accept License agreement" screens. Think it was F14 to accept, which I did, and it was no problem.

That being said... talking to a colleague overseas who attempted a V5R2 -> V5R3 upgrade and he was freaked out by the license agreement, so it is definitely one to be aware of.

Am expecting to do a V5R2 to V5R3 upgrade next week, so will see how it goes then.

Thought about going back, starting from scratch, applying the PTF's so that you can build your software load and then accept your licensing terms and then starting with the V5R3 1st CD. I forget to do some of this as well and was stuck with a box that was basically useless. After all that you have written on this and then circumvented how confident are you on moving forward with this on your production servers. As long as you have all your production server software on your test box and you do all the correct (ORDERLY) steps you should be able to install clean I would think. I don't how much extra of what your doing you want to do in the end from a 1st attemp botched install.

I know this probably isn't much consolation....
You can turn off the nag in PDM ;=)
F18 and "Display Informational Messages" = 2
Not only Rochester can get their priorities right... that was the first thing I turned off ;=)

Upgrading from V5R2 to V5R3 is not going very smoothly.

This started with a dodgy I_BASE_01 CD. The CD in question worked well enough to put
5722999 into the target list of software to install, it worked well enough to initiate the
upgrade, what it didn't do (unbeknown to us) is to install the associated Software
Agreement (no warnings).

The net result was that the install eventually accused us of not accepting the license
agreement for 5722999 and bailed out (no men in black helicopters arrived).

• Make sure you see and accept at least 5722999 and 5722SS1 in the list of Software
Agreements before proceeding with the install.
• If you do have to bail out then you can IPL using the control panel (02 B M followed by
an 03) - might be worth having the control panel documentation handy.

…we went around this loop for a couple of days…

Armed with a different I_BASE_01 CD things went a little better but on completing the
Automatic Install, 5722SS1 Option 3 Extended Base Directory Support had failed to install,
instead it had ended with an MCH3601 by QSRGENSE caused by a Pointer not set for location
referenced.

After some deliberation with: IBM - no we've not seen that one before - Support, and
having applied SI16133 to update QSRGENSE to its latest version ...another couple of days
go by... we carry on and apply the PTFs even though the Extended Base Directory Support
option still shows as a *ERROR.

• It takes about as long installing the PTFs as it does the release software - there are a
lot of them. :)

Also - and I've been here before - way before *you* are ready to IPL it will insist that
you have to IPL anyway. I never have fully fathomed out what order you're supposed to
apply PTFs to stop this happening (the instructions offer little advice)... and then, of
course, you have to wait for the System Initialisation to complete while wondering if it
matters that there are still 6 more CD's worth of PTFs to go.

The system initialised okay... and only(!) 3 WRKPRB errors reported from the IPL.
The rest of the PTFs go on okay.
A brief look around quickly shows...

WebFacing is totally borked (fragile at the best of times).
ODBC and Excel's QueryTables.Add has problems (but then just loading PTFs can break this
one).
ECS is scrambled (that's pretty normal after an upgrade).
Unexpectedly, CPYFRMIMPF appears to be behaving fine.

• Be aware that all the options under GO SERVICE have been moved around... just to keep
you on your toes... for example, Send Test Problem had been relegated from number 2 down
to number 15. Go figure.

But hey, the ADMIN instance of the HTTP Server now starts automatically with every IPL...
well that's, um... really useful... but, do you remember where the Global Settings are to
set the default AutoStart beack to *NO?

And best of all... PDM now has nag adverts! Good to see the Rochester peeps have their
priorities straight. ;)

Back to the Extended Base Directory Support... a zillion PTFs applied... and... it still
fails to install. :(

Total time elapsed so far: 8 working days.
Prospect of seeing any fixes anytime soon: Nil.
Upgrade Schedule: Shot to hell.

BTW, we are doing all of this on a Test Box - we have yet to do the Production Box -
otherwise, I wouldn't be writing this as it's really difficult typing while wearing a
straight jacket. You might not hear from me again, so I will close by wishing you all...

...Happy Upgrading!
