We occasionally used to have problems with our Magstar drives going
offline, so in the backup CL I would do a DSPTAP and check for errors.
If the error indicated that the drive was offline, I would try a VARY
OFF followed by a VARY ON and that would fix the problem - unless of
course there was a physical problem with the drive - or someone forgot
to load a tape.
This might be the approach you need if you want to check the status
automatically.
