Re: WDSC, VPN, and RPG Editing

Another thing to look out for on a WinXP, sp2, machine is "power save
permitted" on your ethernet adapter. Look at properties of the adapter,
you may or may not have a tab for Power. If it's there, make sure the
"power down" is not checked - otherwise you're at microsoft's mercy for
suddenly loosing your connection because they decided it wasn't really
in use...

check your pc, many have "sleep/standby" modes (IBM's are notorious for
this) and so it drops the ethernet connection. You are all thinking the
problem is on the os/400 side of things, it could be on the pc side of
things. I just installed 50 IBM pc's and while within windows I said
"never" on power settings, there was a bios setting to shut down the
hard drive after so long and another to go to standby. Once I fixed
those, problem went away.

You don't say if it is a hardware vpn or some dippy windows vpn, but at
least on the hardware side of things there are some things that can
happen and the same with the windows vpn stuff. So you might look there
also.

Same problem here.
I have a number of customers all with ADSL connections. I connect thru port
23 using telnet. With some customers I can connect in the morning and still
have a connection by night, others will throw me out if I don't do anything
within 5 minutes, and that number of minutes vary.
I still don't know what the reason could be and I'm sure it has not anything
to do with firewalls or other ports. Right, if I use VPN I have no problems
what so ever.

I have the same exact problem execpt for it is opposite of what you
are experiencing. When I connect to one of my remote machines via
VPN my connection is great, no problems. But when I connect witout
VPN I have problems exactly similar to what you described above.

I was able to get the ear of an IBMer and below is what they were able
to offer me.

With regards to:
"BIGGEST PROBLEM:
I have a DSL connection and work from home 90% of the time. When
I go
through a router WDSc seems to have problems disconnecting
frequently
which means I am constantly getting error messages while saving

to
do with the firewall on my router and the ports that are/aren't
open
on it. "

Check for any firewalls between your local workstation and the iSeries
server to make sure they are configured to allow the communications
through. This is because the product accesses OS/400 servers.
Therefore, the ports that the server uses need to allow traffic
through the firewall.
The IBM Toolbox for Java handles the communications to and from your
iSeries server, using the following ports at
http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/toolbox/faqports.htm. A
firewall may be blocking the TCP/IP connection from your local
workstation to port 446 on the iSeries server. This firewall could
have been installed on the workstation, on the network, or on the
iSeries server. To solve this problem, you need to configure a rule
for the firewall to allow for a connection from your workstation to
port 446 on the iSeries server.
