Re: power5+ platform, DB2 for iSeries

1) Until v5r3 of OS/400, the IO architecture was radically different
between p5s and i5s. You could run AIX and Linux on an i5 with no
additional hardware, but running OS/400 on a p5 required additional
hardware to be installed in the p5, and you couldn't run AIX or OS/400
on an OpenPower Linux server..

At v5r4, the i5 IO architecture was changed (simplified, and made
closer to the p5 architecture);

any links that explain the i5 IO changes in v5r4?

Try a google with: i5 iop architecture v5r4

Re the OP's question:
2. Regarding DB2, how portable the database is (for example I need to
install the same database schema on AIX, Linux and AS400, what does it
mean from system support and developers point of view? (export/import,
database objects, priviledges ...)

... the book "SQL Reference for Cross-Platform Development" may be useful:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/db2/library/techarticle/0206sqlref/0206sqlref.html
Also this porting info may be useful:
http://www.ibm.com/servers/enable/site/db2/porting.html

Re the OP's later question:
Is DB2 for iSeries really free or there are some hidden costs
regarding #of CPUs users, connectivity licenses etc... or everything
is included in the more expesive iSeries server comparing to its
"brother" pSeries?

DB2 for i5/OS is built into the operating system (no separate product to buy, install, etc). For interactive queries on green screen (STRSQL), SQL development, etc, there is another product: 5722ST1 Query Mgr and SQL Development Kit. However I believe ST1 may be bundled w/some System i models (Enterprise Edition?)
