Hello,
(some facts, my thoughts, conclusion)
-TRUE existing emulator and software based on Saturn is not using
all the potential of the new hardware.
-Saturn has extended and streached it's life for sooo long...
(it's almost like a patched tire which has more patches than original body)
-true, it could be done like this forever and with proprer care it wouldn't
be bad,
but the time will come to put it aside
(it's obvious: more and more people are deciding to use HPGCC)
-finaly we will start to use technology present with a delay
(will this happen sometime soon or when entirely
new hardware platform will be affordable ?)
At some point i was very enthusiastic about idea of entirely ARM based OS
for 49G+
but i droped the project since i realized that no matter what you do you
need
to follow the mainstream, in other words it's got to be either:
-WinCE (i have a bunch of good reasons to prefere this)
-Linux (not realy my favorite)
-Symbian (even less)
-or some other well known AND widely accepted compact platform
In order to squeeze one of these in, we would need about:
-64MB RAM
-64MB ROM
Like most modern PDA's.
Since that is too much for a 50G CALCULATOR you can't expect it to happen
any time soon.
Maybe you should go and buy a blackberry type of device based on your
favorite OS
and you get :
-widespread OS (application compatible with your desktop PC,mobilephones and
PDA)
-large color display
-QWERTY keys
-connectivity (USB, serial, IrDA, BT, GSM, GPRS, UMTS, WiFi)
-great ammount of RAM/ROM/Storage
-great development and debuging tools
-more developers attracted to the platform
-AT THIS POINT you should develop an application which will run full screen
and have
similar or better functionality like 49G+/50G but NOT emulated rather
adapted for your base OS.
there is MUCHo WORKo there (no need to re-invent the OS)
-if you do well at this point you will have much greater use for your
software especially if you decide to market it
My conclusion:
-use my calculator to crunch numbers, CAS, and fun
-occasionally to make something more fun or interesting on my 49G+
-learn to use the most of the existing platform
-last but not least 49G+/50G is excellent learning tool for ARM and embedded
systems
Finally: to develop an alternative ARM OS for 50G is loss of time and money
