I have. It is a type of usb connector (a 4 pin one) I have seen it
before on other stuff, but I can't find a picture of it in my 5 minutes
of searching.

It does makes sense to use another type of mini USB plug and wire it up
as serial.

If it's really RS-232, what was wrong with using a plain old DB-9?
