Re: 50G Serial Port Tests Underway...

Cyrille,

So if we had the calculator attached to the USB port of a computer, and
powered from that connection, would the serial port power also be powered
through the USB port. That would seem to open the possibility for some
power hungry accessories, at least at your desk.

hello,

You might be able to connect direcly the calculator to the PC with no
extra chips (just connect the TX, RX and ground).
the 6V is normally connected directly to the 4 AAA battery (that you need
to share with the calculator), so you can draw quite a bit of power...

Hi, group.

Just returned from my local electronics shop where I found a suitable
connector for the HP50G's serial port (thanks to those who supplied
the required information!).

To connect to the USB-A Male end of the USB connector, I purchased a
USB-F to 6-pin Mini-DIN M. Then I purchased a 6-pin Mini-DIN F inline
connector that I'm going to wire with cable when I figure out the
correct pinouts. I should have some 'scope screen captures showing
the signal levels.

I'm not sure what the calculator's serial level compliance is. I'm
not sure if I have to translate +V>6 to +6V and -V<0 to 0V for the
calculator. I'm relucatant to measure exactly how much current the 6V
output provides, as I don't want to destroy my new "friend."

I'll post replies to this thread to keep things congruent when I get
the 'scope output and meaningful data.
