Is there any reason to not just leave it formatted as fat-16?

With a 256MB card, your cluster will be bigger than if formatted with FAT32.
Bigger doesn't always mean better. In this case, each time you store a
small file, it will always take a minimum amount of space.

The cluster size (= the minimum amount of space a file will occupy, if
its actual size is greater than zero) on a FAT16 partition of 256MB is
4 kBytes. This isn't overwhelmingly large. Some 12 years ago I got a PC
with a 1 GByte hard disk (very large at that time), partitioned into one
single 1 GB FAT16 partition. FAT32 hadn't been released yet back then,
so that wasn't an option. However, I was bothered by the 16 kByte cluster
size, and soon repartitioned the harddisk into four partitions of 256 MB
each.

FAT16 is only required if you attempt to update the firmware of your
calculator with an SD card. it is not necessary otherwise.

I've never had a problem upgrading the 49g+ with the connectivity kit
(on either mac or pc), so I would format the card in FAT32.

I had a lot of problems getting the connectivity kit to work decently
at all, so now I haven't used it for some years. I asked here if anyone else
had any similar problems, but nobody was able to pinpoint the problem.
Perhaps a firmware upgrade of the calculator would help - if so, I'll do it
with an SD card.
