an open-source CAS would be a great project to start :)

You may get the source: casrelease.zip
(as of 2004.03.11, which is not current,
with recent minor fix for the final "CreateRom" program)

http://www-fourier.ujf-grenoble.fr/~parisse/english.html

| Description:
| Contains the source code for the CAS in the HP 49G calculator.
| With this package, you should be able to modify the source
| and recompile the ROM of the 49G.

Note:

You can recompile only the CAS parts of the ROM;
other parts are in object form, ready for linking.

| Most of the CAS is under the LGPL, but some parts are not,
| so not all of the CAS is modifiable [see additional warning]

No means is provided for combining any update of your own
with the other parts of a more current ROM, however
(it outputs a "vger.flash" file for 49G, version 1.24,
plus a "rom.e49" file for Emu48,
but the "rom.bin" output may not be flashable to a 49G+[?],
even though the other ROM parts are compatible with 49G+)

It also looks to me as if the included "SupRomEntry" file
contains non-fixed entries; if so, and if these
are referenced by the CAS, then the entire package
might need to be regenerated to match later ROM versions.
