It is an embarrassingly sad and hopelessly pathetic time for HP when my 13
year old calculator (ROCK SOLID 48GX )will out perform my HP 49G+ because
the keys break and the software will not do many things that I need that the
48GX will although slower. But not at all is much slower.
HP has convinced me with the HP 49G screen problems no IR port (they try to
tell you with a straight face that is was because teachers thought that you
could beam info across the room to another student during a test. Instead of
building in an IR port that will not work any further than 6 inches) and
finally this HP49G+ monument to bad design it will be the last HP that I
buy! I'd like to write to some at the top if I had a good address.

Why didn't HP use the money that they spent on the calculator "shoe" as
it
has been called (the leather case) and use it on improving the keyboard
design ...
Because that would have made a lot more sense.
What will really get everyone in an uproar is...why couldn't they have
kept and modified the old case and keyboard to accommodate all the new
hardware--including the display and features. The 48GX was, and still
is, a tough act to follow. They had EVERYTHING going for it--including
the choice of colors! Have you tried reading the characters on the
case of a TI-89 in dim light? Lots of luck! Don't get me wrong, the
89 is an excellent calculator in every regard, except their choice of
colors. They don't contrast for ***. So far as durability is
concered, the jury is still out on that. I have one and a TI-86 (most
solid TI in my opinion) but, I don't use it as much as my 49 gx+.
