In fact, (if I have well understood the situation), your WinXP laptop at work has no problem. Thus, you should have these two folders. But I wanted to check whether the computers with WinXP which don't work properly, have these two folders.

Anyway, before you send me the answer, I have several things to suggest (if the folders exist) :

First of all, on a computer which doesn't run the program :
- disable and close the antivirus program, see if the Connectivity Kit launches
- if not, close all the other programs which are in memory
- try if it has changed something
- if not, reboot your computer in safe mode (before the windows logo appears as well as the progress bar, press F8 and select Safe mode)
- try if the program launches correctly
- if not, desinstall the program by doing this : (if you have saved anything in the Conn4x folder, copy your data in another folder)

Delete folder: C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Conn4x
Delete folder: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Menu Démarrer\Programmes\HP 39G Calculator Connectivity Kit
Delete registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Hewlett-Packard\Conn3x (type Regedit in the "Run.." dialog box)
Delete registry value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Conn3x@DisplayName

Delete registry value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Conn3x@UninstallString

Delete registry value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\Conn3x.exe@(Default)

Delete registry value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\Conn3x.exe@Path

Delete registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Conn3x

Delete registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\Conn3x.exe

Delete registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hewlett-Packard\Conn3x

Now, two possibilities : either you install the official release : ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software3/COL7553/ca-22414-1/HP39Gplus_com_USBv1165.zip or you install your program again.

Maybe, what you could do is to install the official release first and see whether it works or not.

On my Win98 machine I just get an error for both. I'll try the WinXP laptop at work tomorrow and let you know.

Anyone able to help with this?

I teach in a high school where all the students use hp39g+ calculators. Recently there has been an epidemic of reports of the old 39g+ connectivity software suddenly failing to work. The symptom is that when you run it the opening screen flashes for a split second and then disappears. Subsequently trying to make it work has no effect. If you look in the CTRL ALT DEL screen at the list of tasks it is not shown but the list of processes shows it is running. Killing the process allows you to repeat the quick flash effect but no more.

I have tried to fix the problem on two student's laptops. On one of them I was able to get it working by uninstalling it and then re-installing (twice). On the other one this had no effect.

My first thought was a conflict with a trendy new program that had appeared called LimeWire (music download) that a lot of students had recently installed on their computers. Unfortunately for that theory some of the students told me that they did not have the LimeWire program on their computers. One parent suggested that the suddenness and wide spread might mean that it was the result of a recent Windows Update. This seems plausible but I don't have the skills to check this or to come up with a cure.

Any suggestions?
