Re: dat72 autoloader

Gilles,

Earliest of DATs (gen 1) did have internal eject dip switches but this all was replaced by the ability to set these in software. I don't recall these in any later autoloader devices. Then again, IIRC these things always "just worked" for me, so I never had to dig very deeply.

Autoloader modes
HP StorageWorks DAT autoloaders may be operated in either stacker or random mode.
Mode is initially determined by what happens after you insert a magazine:
* If the host sends a command to move a cartridge from the magazine to the drive, the
autoloader goes into random mode
* If you select a cartridge by pressing the Select button and then load it by pressing the Load
Cartridge button, the autoloader goes into stacker mode
See the electronic User's Guide on the HP StorageWorks Tape CD-ROM for more information
about autoloader modes

There is nothing in standard MPE that "sends a command to move a cartridge." So you should ALWAYS be in "stacker mode." I would re-recommend the "eject" setting on Devctrl. If that isn't working then maybe something is actually broken.

Good luck,

Jim

I've tried that, but unable to coax the drive to go online.

The only way I can put the drive online is by pressing various
buttons on the front panel of the unit.

Kinda makes the "autoloader" part of this unit pretty useless.

I'm thinking there must be a dip switch setting that needs to be changed.

We have a HP dat 40x6 autoloader (8 tape magazine), and its
configured like this in sysgen:-
LDEV: 777 DEVNAME: OUTDEV: 0 MODE: R
ID: DDSAUTO RSIZE: 128 DEVTYPE: TAPE
PATH: 0/0/1/0.5.0 MPETYPE: 24 MPESUBTYPE: 7
CLASS: TAPE

AND we do this in sysstart:-

devctrl 777,enable,enable

The parms available are compress, eject, and load - we have not
specified load in the above - check help devctrl for options.
It always loads next tape on end of a backup, EVEN though SHOWDEV
does not show a tape at ready - maybe because we are not setting
Load to online? Its showing two leds (ready) now after last nights
backup , but showdev gives AVAIL.

If a tape gives an error I think it moves on to the next one. In
this mode (eject=enable), I cant get my programmatic bring on line to work.

We also have a dds 3 single drive on the traditional ldev 7. We set
this to Eject= disable, as this allows for doing a store, and
programmatically putting the tape back on line remotely - avoids
having to be on site to do backup & restore.

John Pitman

Subject: [HP3000-L] dat72 autoloader

I have a Certance DAT72 autoloader, model no. CDL 432 configured on
an HP3000 and have no problems reading from and writing to the unit.

What I am having difficulty with is trying to automatically load the
next tape from the 6-slot magazine.

Trying the DEVCTRL.MPEXL.TELESUP command with varying parameter
values has not been fruitful. (Specifically, DEVCTRL.MPEXL.TELESUP 8
EJECT=ENABLE LOAD=ONLINE)

Also, looking at the dip switches available do not appear to offer
any obvious solutions there (I don't see a switch associated with the
stacker or random mode operation).

Does anyone have any experience with this model of autoloader or any
suggestions as to how I can configure it so I can issue a command to
load the next tape in the magazine ?

Thanks.
