John,
I am one of the many that sit on HP3000-L and listen, and learn.
I hope my ideas can help.
1) If you are having an issue in IE ONLY, then you can reset IE back to original installation by:
Tools -> Internet options -> Advanced. Towards the bottom of this screen there is a "Reset..." button that has helped me in the past.
2) I run 2 different applications that seem to help me keep my machines clean enough to continue to function:
a) CCleaner (Crap Cleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com)
b) Spybot Search & Destroy ( http://www.download.com - then search "spybot search destroy")
FYI - both ask for donations, but these are optional.
