Re: OT: PC life

Well, that's a wide open question. I would suggest that there really isn't
any office software that cannot be handled by a 2.26GHz machine. I would
further suggest that a cheap way around some of the perceived performance
issues would be the addition of more memory. You did not indicate which OS
you are running on these boxes and how much RAM they have, but I would think
that a quick visit to Kingston.com or crucial.com would save a lot of
aggravation. If the PCs have 256MB, cranking that up to 512MB, will cost
very little and bring in large benefits.

As for the monitors, 15 in flat screens are indeed very small, probably
running at 1024X768. You might want to look at 17 inch flat panels to
replace some of the flat screens. I always consider that monitors (panels or
CRT) will easily last 2 or 3 refreshes of the PC.

Some companies change every 3 years, or have a program to whereby a
percentage of employees (33%) get a new PC every three years. It all
depends on how many PCs you have, and how much effort it is to support
multiple generations of PCs.

Subject: [HP3000-L] OT: PC life

Everyone:

I was asked to determine how long before I need to replace some of our
older DELL PCs. They are Pentium 2.26 GHz. When we bought the 2.26 GHz
with flat screen monitors everyone wanted the new flat screen. The
previous generation of PCs that we gave to a favorite charity worked
fine except for a few of the monitors.

I am getting complaints now about the 15 inch monitor and I have some
users who complain the 2.26 GHz are slow with product such as Microsoft
Access.

When one employee leaves with a better PC, I am being asked to move it
to his coworker. Some PC's could take a large amount of time to
reinstall the software and associated patches.

What is the criterion that others are using to replace PCs?

Thanks

Kent Wallace
