Craig,

as others have already mentioned, Samba/iX mainly offers
the software to make the 3000 act in a "server role" on an
SMB or CIFS network, i.e. Linux or Windows machines can
"map network drives" with files residing on MPE/iX disks.

The only client part that comes with Samba/iX is the smclient
utility program, which allows a 3000 to access an SMB or CIFS
server share in a client role... however, it only provides a
feature set similar to ftp, i.e. you can get and put files,
but you cannot "mount a SMB or CIFS share somewhere into the
MPE/iX HFS directory tree".

So you could use store-to-disk on the MPE side and then use
either smbclient or ftp to transfer the resulting backup files
to your Windows machine, but you would need appropriate disk
space on the 3000 side for those "temporary store2disk files".
