INSTALL MPE on Seagate LDEV 1

I am doing some further work with disc drives on a 918LX lent me by
a friend. I have placed an ST318417N with SCSI ID=5 in the 3.5"
bay as ldev 1 (52/56.5) the DDS2 tape drive has SCSI ID=0
(52/56.0). The Seagate is not from HP and I am attempting to do an
install from the SLT. The system boots from tape and ODE MAPPER
sees the the drive as an ST318417N:

I speculate that I need to do something with respect to formatting
the the HDD so that MPE will properly load itself onto the drive.
What step(s) am I missing?
I sense some sort of cosmic irony at work here. I have not had to
spend nearly as much time running the HP3000 for the past ten years
as I have spent these last two months getting ready to move off of
it.
