The recovery CD is expecting access to the whole HD. since you partitioned it with a Linux portion it does no longer comply with the image size it had when the back up was made. Loose the Linux partition and it should recover.

Not sure how to check it, but I think the bootable CD standard is called "El Torito" - it might be possible to see if it's actually a proper bootable disc...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Torito_(CD-ROM_standard)
If you boot into Windows normally, can you see any files on there ?
Yes.
The cd boots but gives the message:
"Boot from ATAPI cdrom:
No Emulation.
These system recovery cds do NOT support this hp pc model"
It then says "press any key to continue" which leads to "press
any key to reboot".
I gave Hp support the sku # on the cds and they are the correct
ones for this computer. The hard drive has not been changed.
However, I did partition the hard drive and have linux on half of it.
I also have a different audio card from the original and added extra
memory.
I tried removing the new memory and audio card, but the same thing
happened.
Hp support said the hard drive settings shouldn't affect it.
