Laptop was given to me as a thankyou for a project. The warranty had
expired by the time I took possession. It worked for about an hour and
then crashed. HD failed so I replaced it with the same kind. Ordered
the recovery disk set but can't boot from them. Spent a few useless
hours on the phone with HP Support and they determined that the optical
drive was bad. Replaced the optical drive with the HP recommended one.
Still won't boot. I've spent about $190 on this "free" laptop. Any
thoughts on what it may take to repair it and is it worth it? I'm a
Mac-guy but would like to have a Windows laptop at home.
Not sure what HP's recovery DVD is like for this model. Could you have
gotten a defective one? Are there written instructions for how to use
the recovery software? Have you tried a standard Windows Vista install
DVD?
In good condition, this model is selling used for around $450 to $500.
I am not familiar with the exact model, but on the face of it, the money
you spent so far seems worthwhile.
Tablet computers are interesting animals that require special software,
which is either part of Vista or part of the software from HP... Ben Myers
My bro-in-law works for MacAfee and he couldn't get it to boot with
Windows 7 Ultimate DVD and I don't have the standard Vista install DVD.
My understanding is that it needs the Vista Ultimate 64-bit install DVD
for the very reasons you mentioned, special hardware requirements etc.
It doesn't seem to want to keep any BIOS settings that you make ( boot
order, etc) so maybe something got zapped when the HD died. Thanks.
A dead CMOS battery would usually explain why the BIOS settings are not
retained.
Is the CMOS battery the battery that you see when you open up the
laptop to swap out the HD? I can change that.
It is rare for something else to fail in a system as a consequence of
hard drive failure... Ben Myers
Thanks. Good to know.
