SATA Controller to Backplane

My Proliant saga continues.
I've already posted once that I've bought this Proliant ML150 G3 server,
unfortunately outlook won't let me see the reply. Thanks to whoever
replied - I have now found a source for the drive caddies - HP part
373211-001 seems to be the correct one.
The next problem is the one I expected next, I've installed the Adaptec
2420SA SATAII RAID controller - but of course the standard cable to the
hot-plug backplane is too short to reach the connectors.
HP technical basically say "sorry but we don't have anything longer", makes
you wonder what happens if someone installs the HP SAS card then?
So I'm looking for an SATA cable from the backplane (SFF-8484) to 4x
standard SATA connectors.
Adaptec has the nice poster in the controller packaging, which unfortunately
uses the same picture for two products and mixes SAS and SATA between the
name and description - just enough to make me lose confidence. The part
number seems to be 2219700-R. Of course no-one in the UK wants to sell it
me, or quotes 6 weeks and £70+ for the pleasure of a cable that sells in the
US for $40.
Are all SAS/SATA backplane connectors the same?
Is SAS and SATA the same connector?
I cannot believe why upgrading a computer from a basic spec to something
better is made so deliberately difficult. Hasn't anyone ever done this
before? Does HP, IBM, Sun and everyone else operate this closed shop policy?
I would have been better off running a £6 million company using servers
built from parts bought at the Don Valley Stadium computer fair.
Any ideas appreciated.
Nigel
