First with XP and now with Vista, HP has consolidated the drivers for many
printers and PSC devices. The consolidated drivers provide the lowest
common
denominator of printing, leaving out duplexing and other more advanced
features.
The result is that the printers are not quite obsolete, but they do not do
all
the things they did when originally released.

This leaves people with some unfortunate choices:
1. Do not upgrade operating systems for a while, buying some time to use a
perfectly good device with its full capabilities.
2. Use the device with the new operating system, but reduced capability.
3. Throw away a perfectly good device and replace it with one that is
compatible
with the new operating system, provides ALL the features of the old
device, is
cheaply manufactured, and uses expensive ink cartridges with small
capacity.
4. Investigate and possibly use a version of Linux with open source
drivers that
still function the same way from major release to major release.
5. Investigate and acquire 3rd party solutions that give back the missing
features. Not sure what exists here.

Should the blame and anger be directed at HP, Micro$oft, or both? Wanna
bet
that they both want people to pick item 3 from the list above? ... Ben

I think it's like auto manufacturers wantng you to buy a new car every two
years. HP can blame the os for the fact that a new printer would work better
than your old one. One reason I haven't upgraded 98 on one pc is because of
the duplex thing. I use that old pc mainly for word processing and printing.
One option is to dual boot 98 with XP or whatever and save up your print
needs for a 98 boot.
