Recovering IPAQ That Boots USB ver 1.01 Hung

I was running an IPAQ 4700 series successfully with Pocket PC 2003, and
during an attempted upgrade to Windows CE 5.0 the IPAQ has entered into a
strange state from which I cannot recover. I need help determining if the
IPAQ is recoverable and pointer to the procedure to recover it.
I ordered the Windows CE 5.0 upgrade CD from HP, and apparently there may be
some requirement with this to upgrade to ActiveSync 4.1 before attempting to
upgrade to Windows CE 5.0? Nothing in the documentation stated that, but
they do give you an option for an ActiveSync 4.1 upgrade that is independent
of the Windows CE 5.0 upgrade, so I'm just speculating on possible causes.
The Windows CE 5.0 upgrade proceeded normally, and then announced that it
would be upgrading the HP IPAQ ROM BIOS from 1.xx to 2.xx. I confirmed the
selection to proceed, but the update progress bar never went past 0.0%.
Note that I did have a successful ActiveSync 3.7 connection at the time, and
I had used the IPAQ from Windows XP desktop via ActiveSync 3.7 without
problem up to this time. The procedure timed out after sometime, but now
the IPAQ is in a permanent state where if you cold boot it it comes up with
"Serial" version 1.01. If you insert to the USB cradle, this changes to
"USB" version 1.01. Activesync 4.1 was installed, but it does NOT have the
ability to sync with the IPAQ in this strange state.
Does anyone have any ideas on what caused this event, and is this IPAQ
recoverable in this state? If yes, what ist he detailed procedure to
recover it?
