Re: Photosmart 3310 incompatible with XP Media Center Edition?

I tried to install a new Photosmart 3310 on my wireless network which
has two computers connected to the router. A laptop (Windows XP 2002
SP2) connected wirelessly and a brand new Dell (Windows XP Media
Center Edition, Version 2002, SP2).

1. The printer installed on my wireless network easily (the second one
I tried, that is-- the first on couldnt find the network and I took it
back to the store)

2. The software installed on my laptop just fine and I could run the
printer from my laptop

3. THE PROBLEM: The software would not install on my Dell Mediacenter.
By this I mean the setup.exe file *would not run*. Double clicking it
caused the disk to whir but nothing would happen. No Splash Screen, no
starting of the Install Shield nothing! The software simply would not
begin the install process

Many hours of interaction with HP support (and my computer whiz
nephew) could not solve the problem. Finally HP told me that the
sofware does not have drivers for XP Media Center Edition. I simply do
not believe this but I do believe HP support incapable of assisting
with this problem.

Has anyone else seen the problem? Any suggestions? For the record,
here are things I unsuccessfully ttried:

1. Copying the cd contents to my c: drive and running setup from there
2. Repeating (1) while running in safe mode
3. Repeating 1 with all startup items disabled, and all running
services except Microsoft ones disabled
4. Downloading the Web_Install file from HP and running its setup.exe

That 3310 printer has everything I want -- wireless, scan, copy,
separate ink cartridges -- I want to make it work?

Can anyone shed any light on this?

TIA,

Clark

Are you installing from an administrator account? You might try directly connecting the printer to the MCE computer, install it locally following the installation instructions. Then move it to the network, change the port assignment for the printer to the network address.

Here are some Windows printer sites that might help:
http://www.coribright.com/Windows/
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm

You might also update the Windows Installer and/or Installshield. The latter has a troubleshooter section for failures like you are experiencing.
