HP Scanjet 4470 scanning with lines across page

I just hooked up a used Scanjet4470 to a Dell Dimension 4550 PC and the
scanner doesn't read white correctly, puts lines of color all over the
page (does this on-screen as well, so I know it's not the printer.)Has
anyone had this problem? Found a solution? Any ideas greatly welcomed...
