Thanks for that tip Ben. I found that it was a seagate drive so I
downloaded their utility and put it on a CD.

It comes up OK and lets me select the tests but no matter if I select
the quick hard drive test or the memory test, it will just hang when I
click on the "next" button.

Is there any general PC diagnostics I could try? I'm not convinced
that the seagate software isn't faulty. I'll have a search.
