Re: Help Upgrading from ME to XP

Thanks doug and Ben for the response. Since I have seen many different
possible causes for this error I have gone back to the beginning and am
starting the process of trying to determine the problem. So far here is
what I have done. 1. I put my old 20 gig drive with Me loaded on it which
runs just fine no problems back in. 2. I did download and install the one
bios update for this machine that i found on HP's website. It took fine
rebooted and everything still running well. 3. Next I ran the
compatability test on the Windows XP disk and the only things that came up
was some software, which I anticipated and no big deal. There were no
hardware issues listed. 4. Next I downloaded memtest86, since there were
mentions of memory problems. I ran the test, which I have never used this
before so I am not quite sure how to read this but once it got to test 3 it
started popping up what i believe is an error giving me a memory address of
149.2mb. It kept giving me this same memory address error thru the rest of
the test. Not being familar with this program but having a general idea I
decided to swap the ram modules into the opposite slots and ran the test and
sure enough it started giving me the error at memory address 21.2mb. so I
removed one stick of ram and ran the test one the 128mb stick and it started
giving me the error at 21.2mb so I took that stick out and put my other
stick of 128mb in and ran the test and at that point it did not give any
erroes at all. So now I have a question and am not sure if you might know
or if I need to post somewhere else. Since memtest86 only gave the one
memory address as a problem and since my comp will boot up fine even with
just this one stick of ram does this mean it only has one bad spot in the
ram? and is this enough to keep it from loading XP? Next question if this
one spot is enough to keep it from loading, since the minimum specs for XP
is 128mb ram should it be possible to load XP with just the one stick of ram
that is showing no errors then after getting it loaded put the other stick
back in?

Just wanted to give an update and pass along what I am finding out with this
problem.

Thanks,

Jeff
