What is it you are trying to learn from these benchmark tests? As
they obviously have little reflection on the CPU power of the systems.
I would say one of the biggest speed factors is the BASIC. For
example, C128 BASIC runs MUCH slower the C64 BASIC even though they
both use the same VIC-II chip, the same CPU, etc. This is most
likely because of all of the extra commands available and perhaps bank
switching. The VIC-20 wins over the C64 most likely for 2 reasons,
the VIC-20 runs slightly faster anyway due to CPU and VIC
configuration, and also has less characters on the screen to move
around.
I always thought the Plus/4 had the best BASIC of any of the Commodore
8-bits because it was reasonably powerful with graphics/sound
commands, had disk commands like reading the directory, etc. But it
ran almost the same speed as a C64. In many cases, you could say that
Plus/4 BASIC runs faster than the C64 if you were trying to do
graphics because the C64 would require huge number of POKE/PEEK
statements and have to draw lines and circles manually through BASIC
loops, whereas the Plus/4's internal BASIC routines would handle those
for the user.
