this is so, is there any reason for that? I still want one but will
I'm not sure how to respond to this, since I never stated there was support for CD-ROMs in uIEC. I think I did mention that I might consider adding support at some point in the future, but I was very specific about not committing myself. In short, it's not supported since most people don't care, and it's not easy to do.
The only reason the uIEC has an IDE connector is due to its heritage. I implemented CF support by taking advantage of the Compact Flash "True IDE" mode, which allows a CF card to look like an IDE hard drive from an electrical perspective. When it came time to develop the production board, I decided it cost nothing to include the IDE drive connector and it left the door open for other uses, like CD-ROM or DVD-ROM support. It also allowed folks who wanted to re-use an older IDE drive an opportunity to do so.
only get it if it has the support for the CD-ROMs, the Hard Drives andIf that is your stance, I'd recommend you buy an IDE64, as it supports CF, IDE, and CDROM now.
the CF/SD cards as they are the hardware items that I use here.
Some folks have asked me about CD-ROM support, and one person has sent lots of information on the format. However, adding CD-ROM (and no doubt DVD-ROM support, since that's what people will ask for next) requires extensive modifications to the codebase. CD-ROMs commonly use the Joliet filesystem, which is a tweak of the standard ISO9960 filesystem format. DVD-ROMs are something else entirely...
Let me know what's going on with them whenever you get the chance,
Since most uIEC owners probably own a PC or Mac, I'm more inclined to provide CD-ROM support by tethering the uIEC to a PC/Mac via USB. That way, the uIEC can connect to any resource the PC can see (optical drives, flash drives, USB drives, local HDDs, CF, network shares, web sites, ftp sites, etc.) Think C64TPC or 64HDD running on Windows, Linux, or OSX. To me, this gives more bang for the buck.
