RF? As in BlueTooth or 802.11?

For starters, it needs power. The nice thing about USB is that you
can draw power from the USB host. With a standalone RF device, you
would need a power supply (battery or wall-wart). BlueTooth is the
only low-power option for a battery-powered device. But how many PC's
have BlueTooth? None of mine do. So then 802.11 is an option, but
that is far more power hungry, and complex. Doing something with
802.11 is overkill.

Another option that would be far easier to implement, that I have
considered, is something like the SiliconLabs CP210x along with an
Atmel. You can perhaps power the "cable" from the USB host and not
have all the crazy overhead of the USB driver in the processor. A
simple serial protocol could do all the work.

Hmmm....maybe an idea?
