Hello Redrumloa,
Some questions that I and others issued are still
unanswered:
? 32 bit or a 64 bit version of Windows (not sure,
if the build number is enough to deduce that)
Most certainly 32Bit, WinXP Pro SP2.
? What is the output of "uname -a" for the Ubuntu
installation
redrumloa@redrumloa:~$ uname -a
Linux redrumloa 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Tue Dec 18 05:28:27 UTC 2007
x86_64 GNU/Linux
? Who manufactured the XA1541 cable
NKC electronics -> http://www.nkcelectronics.com/
http://cgi.ebay.com/Commodore-XA1541-Adapter-PC-1541-64-128_W0QQitemZ260201147109QQihZ016QQcategoryZ74945QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
? Which type of transistors were used to build the
XA1541 cable?
SMD, no visible part numbers or markings.
? Beside the brand brand and type of the motherboard,
which revision is it from?
ASUS A8S-X
rev 1.03
? What is the chipset used on this board (North- and
Southbridge), does this correctly correlate to the
technical specs from the mainboard manual (it
mentions SiS)
Yes, it appears to match. The Northbridge has a heatsink, but the
Southbridge matches (SIS 965L).
? What is the Super-I/O chip code
! taken from the chip itself, not from the manual
! see also page 1-6 or 1-7 -- motherboard
layout -- of the mainboard manual to locate the
chip
! please write up as many as possible from the
chip's ID code, there seem to exist different
revisions with specific features/bugs and the
right data*** with errata specs needs to be
chosen.
Exactly as shown on the chip:
ITE
IT8712F-A
0543-IXS
N19J20
Some conflicts in reporting from different reports:
2007-12-16: "... I did try under MSDOS on this
very system. It did not work."
versus:
2007-12-31: "I was able to successfully use Star
Commander on this same computer, with
Win98."
==> If it works under SC with Win98, it really also
should work under SC with MSDOS. Doing it under
Win98 is a lot more difficult than with MSDOS
I am willing to put forward the MS-DOS test may have been a user
error. I took an old MS-DOS hard drive and hooked it my system in
haste and may not have had everything configured. After finding a
fresh Win98 install working, I'd say disregard my earlier report of MS-
DOS not working altogether.
