We're a long way off from seeing OS on a chip. We may see the death
of mechanical drives, but not likely that soon. It's still cheaper
(mechanical)... But Microsoft keeps making their OS so much bigger
that it's impossible for memory to catch up. I suspect maybe in the
next couple of decades we may see a "boom" in memory being so much
bigger and cheaper that it does eventually obsolete all mechanical
hardware. But we arent there yet.
Tom,
You'd be wrong on two points here. Phoenix has just released details of a
hypervisor OS as part of the BIOS that will allow true instant-on
capabilities for things such as OS repair, running internet applications,
etc. It actually could make an OS like GNU/Linux and Windows more of a
fancy window manager than anything else.
Also, even the most resource intensive version of Windows, Vista Ultimate,
only uses 1.5 Gigs of space on the HD (mainly because it copies the entire
contents of the install DVD to the HD so you don't ever have to dig it back
out). PC SSD's are up to 32G with 64G and 128G drives expected next year.
Considering the biggest laptop drives are only 350G, a 128G drive should be
more than an adequate replacement.
Oh about your Phoenix BIOS thing.. I did read something about I
beleive it was Asus motherboards had a mini-Linux built into BIOS and
you could use it to get on the internet and run Firefox.. This may
be the begenning of the trend that gets OS into BIOS. But still going
to take awhile.
