I dug out my old C128D to show my children the other weekend. The disk
drive was a little hesitatant at first, but after a couple of goes it
seemed to be OK.

A day or so later though it stopped working altogether. If the drive is
connected to the motherboard and powered up, the 128 will try to speak
to it and will never reach the READY prompt (but if the drive data cable
is then disconnected, the system will reach the prompt).

In 64 mode, it will start up, but any attempt to use the disk drive will
cause a similar hang.

At startup, the drive's light flashes green for a moment and that's all.

Resetting the drive or the computer makes no difference. Disconnecting
the leads from the drive's control board to its mechanics makes no
difference.

Disconnecting the power lead from the drive, or the data cable to the
motherboard, the computer will start up normally.

There is also what seems to be an intermittent problem with a graphics
chip: in 128 mode, alternate columns of characters are in an incorrect
character.

I dismantled the computer in order to see if there were any chips I
could reseat to address this, and it was after that that the problems
with the disk drive appeared.

Is it possible that I have simply connected the drive data cable the
wrong way round? I don't think I have, and I am reluctant to turn it the
other way round in case that really damages something.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hello!

It sounds like you might have plugged a cable in backwards when you took
it apart, or you might have damaged a chip somehow. Get a schematic and
make sure everything is plugged in correctly, also check to see if any
pins got bent with any of the connections.

Good luck!!
