Hi Mark,
I have been messing around with this all morning and finally have
gotten it to work. What's interesting is that I had to do the exact
opposite of you. I removed the XA1541 and replaced it with an XM1541
cable.
I have an X1541, XE1541, XM1541, XA1541 and XEP1541 here. I did a lot
of testing and the XA1541 would not work on either of my desktop
machines or my 486 SX-33 laptop so I'm wondering if it might be bad.
I got it from the same place you did the Vintage Cable store on eBay,
but that is also where I got my X1541 and XM1541 cables and they work
great.
I do have GUI4CBM4WIN as well, I ended up downloading Payton's version
and installing it all in one package after I got this going.
As a side note, I cannot get Star Commander to work in plain DOS with
my XEP1541 interface completely. It locks up a lot and gives me lots
of timeout errors. When it does work it's super fast. MNIB works
great each and every time, so I'm going to guess there are issues
between my motherboard/chipset/parallel port and Star Commander.
.
