Hi, First of all thanks for your reply...
I would need some help to test all the options you told me to try to
fix the problem... I opened the sx 64 case, and checked all the chips,
(if they were well inserted) but maybe you may help me find where
exactly is the CIA...
But the question is: If the CIA is well inserted and I still have that
problem, how can I replace it? And I still have doubts, if the faulty
CIA is the problem, that shouldn't be "bypassed" when attaching an
external drive? Shouldn't be functioning the CIA of the external drive
controller instead of the one inside the SX 64?
Besides, what do you mean by "swapping" the 8701 clock generator?
You mean replacing it? Where Do I get the replacement parts? From a
C64 or from a disk drive?
Thanks for your help, I hope you may have time to reply...

Hi, I would need some help in fixing this problem with SX-64.
I can't load any program from disks... most of the times I can load the
directory, some other times, neither...
I thought it was a disk drive problem, so I attached an external 1571 drive
(with device 9) and I had the same results... load"test",8 --->
loading -----> disk drive red light always on. No signs of life... I have to
run/stop --> restore...
Other commands seems to work (open 15,8,15, "I") for example, and sometimes
even formatting disks... but never load...
Any suggestions?!?! Please, HELP!!!!
Stefano
Have you checked and made double sure that all the CIA (6526 -
controller) chips are fully inserted nice and snug? Also if you have
and you still get the same problem, you might have a bad CIA chip and
will need a replacement. If you find that neither of these suggestions
fix the problem, you might have to swap out the 8701 Clock Generator
Chip (the one next to the 6567 VIC Chip in the aluminum box. Sometimes
timing problems are the causes of disk failures and they are usually
caused by the Clock Gen. chip.
Let us know how it turns out! :):):):):)

I can honestly tell you that I have no idea of where the CIA is
located at in the SX as I had never seen the insides on one;, but it's
number is 6526. There are two of them, one for the User Port and
drivesthe other for the Keyboard and joysticks. If you can get it
apart carefully enough to look inside with a flashlight, you should be
able to find one of them fairly easily. They are both 40-PIN Chips.
Your right about that "Bypass!" You're right about that one! I wasn't
thinking about that perspective...... :(:(:(:( Hummmm... Maybe the
clock "might be the problem," but if the other drive worked when it
was plugged in, then it sounds like it might just be the disk drive
itself. So with that in mind, I would suggest that you look at the
controller board underneath the drive and look for the chips labeled
6522! There are two of them. They are your "DRIVE CONTROLLERS." I have
a bunch sitting here if you would like a few to test out this
"theory."
I don't think the clock gen woould be the problem if other drives
work properly, so it's in internal issue.
Let me know how it goes....
Good Luck...
Charles
