A Platform War.
Maybe AMD wants to partner up and make a cheap xbox/playstation that
targets both gamer and desktop groups.
These 'strictly game' consoles should become a thing of the past.
Nintendo started it and, now that they're about to get completely
trounced again - I hope it really is the end.
Plus, these PC towers are just way too big and heavy. It's stupid. 90%
of the people don't need 3 drive bay slots, 3 extra pci card slots and
an extra AGP slot.
I'm not saying I don't need it, though!
I hope what you say is true. I miss the platform diversity. The markets
are way too big. You're either PC or Mac and that's IT.
If that does happen though, compatability will get worse (VMs may make
that less of a problem) but smaller SIGs will become more community
like and the console/computer might become a collectors item again.
Maybe Atari will reach back into the market. Maybe Commodore will have
a fighting chance.
I only say this though because I am intensely interested in retro
introperability on both the HW and SW levels.
I'd get a console/computer that ran as all the legacy Ataris or Commies
in hardware and also had seamless interop with newer/faster hw. I'd
also love to see the old games running decked out in longer playing
game modules with the same core software interacting with newer hw when
esthetically pleasing - and having a high end programming environment
condusive to such activity.
Probably many people here would favor the same thing.
OK - now the real stuff:
Zilog and AMD team up to make the Z64-80.
Rockwell and Western Digital team up for the 650864.
Anyone care to contribute ideas on where the audio and video devices
would originate?
