C 128's ROM socket

I was reading an earlier post about burning EPROMs for the C128. This is
sort of a new topic, so I didn't reply to that. Payton said
" just wanting something I could use to make a customized version of
Servant and possibly even put a few extra tools in it as well, such as
PUZIP and GUNZIP."
Is it possible to have something in the 128 that acts like a disk drive?
Or does it use some kind of menu?
I've thought about that ROM socket in the C128 a lot and have on occasion
been tempted to use a disected C128 as my shuttlecraft brain instead of a
C64. The extra video output would also be usefull. But the size of the
board is rather large and the power requirements are higher. Not to
mention a C128 still costs some money to buy used whereas a C64 is rather
cheap. (and I still "may" be able to use a DTV if I can get those shift
registers working right on the joy ports without the keyscan routine
getting in the way.. I have a theory on that which I haven't assembled
the board to test it yet) and replacement parts for the C128 would be
tougher.. but still, I'd like to collect as much info as possible before
making my decision. I'll start building the computer systems in probably
the next month or two as I'm nearly finished with the exterior and
getting it weatherproof. I do not think my program is going to fit into
a regular 8K or 16K ROM socket because of the graphics I'm going to want
to store. So I'm hoping to use something on the IEC port to store more
data. If I have to, I'll disect a 1541. (it should be smaller without
the power supply transformer and such that won't be needed) but was sort
of holding out for Jim Brain's IEC device or something similar. I gave
up trying to read/write to a serial flash ram chip via the user port.. it
can probably be done, but I failed at it. Anyway, this socket in the
C128 still mesmorizes me as to what its potential is. How much data can
you store there? Can it be accessed like a disk drive? How is it
different from the ROM sockets in the Plus/4 (where the two 16K chips go
for the retarted 4-in-1 programs) ?
