Just a FYI.. It might be outside of the scope of what you're trying to do, or maybe not..
It is.
Using a setup like you described, it should also be possible to create raw GCR images of 1541 disks. (.g64 format)
Actually the first, original idea was to write a .g64 creator but I decided to start with this one as I couldn't get the ID_64 stuff to work reliably on my hardware. .g64 is in the drafting stages now.
It may require 8k or more ram being added to the 1541 drive,
With parallel connection there is no need for track buffer as one can transmit GCR in real-time.

GCR images allow many copy protected original games to run in an emulator :)
I know ;-)
Thanks for posting about it. Just mainly wanted to put the idea out to you about the GCR images as I didn't see that in the TODO list :)
Because it's a separate stuff for now. I was also thinking about the all-in-one imaging machine but decided to split it into four programs as to keep them manageable and also to make IDE64 manager plugins out of them where appropriate. Once they all work as expected, I might decide to combine them in one, bigger prg.
To sum it up - .g64 is in the plans. .
