Hi
I tried to reply in mail, but it has bounced back off, so I send it here:
I greatly appreciate your offer, however - where are you from? I'm from Czech Republic, so postage fees might be nasty when sending this for example overseas.
Anyway, if we would be going to do such a deal - will sending the mainboard alone be ok? Whole computer is quite heavy so postage will be higher. If so, should I buy those chips and send them to you, or will you get them and I'll pay them for you?
Thanks for your answer

I'll say it once and i'll say it again, those MT ram chips are crap..
If it goes straight to memory test and shows red, i'm sure the problem is in your RAM.
You can use 4164 DRAMS no problem, 150NS is fine, I think 80-150NS will do you fine.
Be aware some DRAMS have a slow bleed effect, meaning if you turn your Atari off and right back on, it might not come up correctly because the RAM has not had enough time to bleed down to 0. Just be aware of this when you try the bargain RAM out.
I would say if they aren't socketed to go ahead and replace them with sockets and try the RAM, that way if they don't work how you want then you can just buy the correct replacements and do a simple swap.
I'd be happy to do this for you, I just repaired Jason Harmon's 130XE and it's on its way back to him now. He had MT type RAM and I removed, socketed, and replaced the RAM.. Works like a champ.
E-Mail me.

Hi
I know this topic has been discussed in the "Dying 800XL" thread as
well, but that thread was rather long and my question is of a bit
different kind, so I decided to start another thread.
The problem is: few days ago, I got one 800XL (for a bottle of wine ;)
and it seems ok except for the fact, that right upon power-up, it goes
to memory test, which shows almost all squares red, so I guess my
problem is with the memory. So I've opened the machine, to check whether
some of the chips is getting hot - none of them does. So I guess I'll
have to replace all of them.
My question therefore is: The memory chips in my 800XL are labeled MT
4264-15 - which spare should I use? I'm able to get some 4164 for a
bargain price - will they do? Any suggestions on other suitable chips?
Another question - is their timing (I guess the -15 means 150ns)
critical or is it possible to replace them with chips with another timing?
I guess I'll leave the soldering to somebody more skilled, but anyway -
is soldering in some sockets and putting the new chips into sockets a
good or bad idea?
Is there anything other I should check prior to replacing the ram chips?
Many thanks for your answers.
