Ah, I thought that would be the case. A long time misconception
is that a stereo card is a "sound card", in the same sense as on the
PC. It is NOT. All the sound generator circuity is on the motherboard.
Why Apple choose to tie all 8 stereo channels into 1 monaural (that's
then mirrored to the left and right channel) requiring the need for a
third party stereo card, is really bizarre.

As I recall, Apple Computer was under legal restrictions from a lawsuit
which restricted sound generation. I don't recall all the details though.

You're thinking of Apple Records' legal agreement with Apple Computer:
that they would never enter the music business. Apparently, the Ensoniq in
the Apple IIGS in 1986, and the Apple MIDI Interface introduced two years
later made them feel they broke that agreement. They didn't sue Apple
until 1989 though, long after the GS had been around.

I think the slight crippling Apple did to the Ensoniq (i.e. no stereo
jack, no microphone jack, only 64K DOC-RAM with no option to add
more when it supported 128K) was more a short sighted cost cutting
measure than anything to do with avoiding legal confrontations. None
of those things prevented it from being a (then) state-of-the-art music
synthesizer. Just the lack of good software really...

On a somewhat related tangent, I picked up an Ensoniq ESQ-1
synthesizer keyboard a few weeks ago. I opened it up to do some
repairs and thought it cool to see it has the EXACT same Ensoniq
5503 chip as the IIGS, right down to being in the same 40-pin DIP
package with the "ICS 1261D" part number. :)
