The few ISP's still running shell servers may indeed just happen to offer
non-ppp connections, but one does not require the other.
Thank you for the advice. I already have a free dial-up account. When
it comes to Apple IIgs, I am only looking for FTP functionality in
order to copy files to and from the box; do not really need anything
else.
