will it work? I have 4 of them sitting here
I guess I'll try and let you know..

If you find all of the signals inside that are missing from the
joystick/mouse port,
then, YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they should work.
Otherwise, no.
Michael, feel free to jump in here. :o))))))))))))
Yes, that's the issue with "compact" machines--if they don't have
the annunciators (which were on the internal 16-pin game port), then
they can't "talk".
I've considered an implementation that would use the speaker port for
a digital output and a pushbutton for an input; however, that would
not only re-use an output that is widely used (for sounds), but any
network activity would also sound quite raucus. ;-)
On the IIc and IIc+, the IOU is different, so you can't even tap
into the annunciator signals internally (they are re-used as soft
switches).
I'm less familiar with the Laser 128--maybe the annunciators are
still there...
NadaNet uses annunciator 1 and PB 1 for output and input.
The signals listed in the 128 book for joysticks are:
1 - SW1 - game switch 1
2 - +5 volt
3 - ground
4 - reserved
5 - GAME0 - game paddle 0
6 - N.C. - no connection
7 - SW0 - game switch 0
8 - GAME1 - game paddle 1
9 - reserved
Is it also a mouse port, as with the IIc?
