It surprises me because I bought that card new in 198something, and
was never wildly impressed with it. It required software to be loaded
into it before doing anything, and if a user should happen to press
the button without pre-loading any software, it would freeze the
machine, locking it up tight.
You obviously have the perspective of an actual user, then ;-)
I still have it and the software too, and was just wondering if its
value had meant that someone had found a good use for it.
I was shocked at the final hammer price...
IMHO lots (= not all !) of these expensive pieces will never be
practically "used" by the successful bidder. I don't expect the
collector (and it's exactly what he does - "collect") to be a
"retro power user".
I'm sure that some parts are only bought _because_ of their
price and will be stored to be merchandise again at some
point. An investment - nothing more, nothing less.
Some bidders are indeed users but they seem to hoard what
they can which results in comments the like of
"I have several variants of this super-rare accelerator card
made from the company Unobtainium! I'm happy that I have
5 of the 9 cards in existance known to function - you should
see how fast they run!" Very helpful ;-)
In consequence lots of these parts are lost to the community
- sometimes forever. Nobody will scan the docs, make images
from the disks, make photograph from the cards or even try
to reverse-engineer the hardware to design a modern variant.
It's a pity when that happens.
