further checking shows that I have the older ][e, with the 6502, but

the chips, I can upgrade it to the later version.
Any info on that? I mean, how hard is it to get those chips now? Is
it worth it?
How about just swapping the cpu to a 65c02, any benefits in that?
If you can get the 65C02, you can use EPROMs for the other three upgrade
chips, provided you have (or can get access to) a burner. Their content
is floating around the net. Although it must be mentioned that for the
character ROM, you need either a Motorola 68764 EPROM (fairly obscure
and unsupported by many burners), or you need to build an adapter. For
the other two ROMs, you can use standard 2764s.
The 65C02 chip is probably the most important part of the upgrade,
followed by the MouseText character ROM. The other two ROMs (which do
have to be upgraded as a pair) are mostly about fixing bugs rather than
enhancing the abilities of the machine. Of course, in theory some
software might check the ROM content to decide whether or not a 65C02 is
present, wrongly assuming that the upgrade was always done as a single set.
