As I recall, Instant Pascal was impressive, but didn't offer a

Instant Pascal was 128k IIe/IIc ...

It was quite a feat on such hardware - the problem was always that it
implied a platform that didn't really exist, insofar that the
underlying functionality of Instant Pascal was only sufficient to
support itself, and not general purpose applications.

I've always admired applications of this ilk, which gave you an idea
of what *could* be done, if only you had just a little more....

Yes, too bad. I had high hopes for this environment. It was quite a sophisticated IDE except that it had no linker or programmatic window resize control. I think it was killed by marketing who forced it to be a toy and have the Mac version be the tool. The manual even says to create a real program you have to copy the source code over to the Apple Pascal environment and recompile. Sheesh. So close.

What is the underlying implementation? Is is Apple Pascal-compatible
p-code, or is it something unique to Instant Pascal?

Perhaps some hacking could be done. ;-)

I always regarded it as a toy, and suspected it of using a more
"tokenized source" approach, like Applesoft.
