I didn't do anything really, except clean it. I took the case apart and
washed all the plastics in the shower with a scrubbing brush and soap
(Just as Silicon Sam describes). I think the shiny look is by-product
of the lighting and the photo.
I did buy 4 small pots of model paint (light brown, 2 versions of cream
and white) and from these I mixed a perfect color match and carefully
(with a fine brush) retouched the surface scratches.
Because of the textured surface of the case, It's now almost impossible
to tell there were any scratches at all, as you can see from the photo.
Here is the full list of repairs:
- Clean up case, and remove sticky brown tape
- Find an original style replacement keyboard (if you remember I
accidentally spilt flux remover on the original, melting many of the
key caps). Transplanted 4 key switches from my melted keyboard to the
new one, as they were dead. Other keys (about 5) experienced the double
letter syndrome. This was fixed by spraying 'Relay cleaner' into the
keyswitch and cycling the shaft for about 3 - 5 mins each.
- Replacing all the IC's from a known good apple II+ to find what IC's
were bad (3 bad IC's were found in total). I had to do this twice as I
didn't catch all the problems the first time.
- Someone had previously desoldered 2 sockets near the keyboard socket,
and had ripped up some of the traces. I sent the board off to the US
(from Japan where I live) to have them professionally repaired).
- I believe a lower case mod had been done, and there were 3 extra
sockets and IC's soldered to the prototype area. I removed everything
including the bundle of wires.
- Motherboard professionally washed.
- Power supply was dead...now fixed.
Phew!
Good as new.
Case # is 5394
Motherboard # is 5689
Power supply # is 5558
