It's easy if the stick uses microswitches with three contacts (normally open/normally closed/common) and you can rewire it internally. Just put the two vertical switches in serial, with a resistor parallel to each of them. One switch is connected in "normally open" mode, one in "normally closed" mode. Same for the two horizontal switches.
For example the "Competition Pro" models allow this modification IIRC.
