Hi Mark,
we seem to be thinking along the same lines ....
I see a potential for 3 types of cards
a) Dedicated USB host card that is driven by the 6502 CPU and supports
a single USB device (type). Has native support in ROM/RAM. (Similar to
Atari device cart)
b) Co-processor (PIC or other 8bit micro) based USB host adapter that
can be flashed (or switched) for different device classes. Apple II
system should support multiple cards at the same time. Could act as an
electronic switch a slot ...
c) Ultimate multifunction single card USB host adapter. Supports
multiple device classes concurrently, coprocessor based etc... possible
example could be implemented using something like (or modeled after)
the USBWiz (arm) OEM board. Host access for the USBWiz is via UART, IC2
or SPI.
I like your idea about emulating (or protocol converting) existing
firmware calls for certain devices like disks or printer cards.
Since most existing USB storage implementations are really SCSI over
USB that might be a good place to start from an integration point of
view...
While we are on the USB topic - I can see a use for a Apple USB device
adapter card that would turn the Apple II into a cool USB peripheral
for the PC ... Possibly providing support for direct access to Apple II
hardware from software emulators running on the PC.
Glenn
