I would agree that a consumer level plug and play USB host adapter for
the Apple II family would be quite a feat for a hobbiest(s) to pull off
.... for the reasons David stated and others....
The question boils down to your expections for such a device ...?
At one end of the spectrum one might assume that it should be a similar
implemention to that which one finds on a PC ie - hub and multi device
support, hot plugability etc ..
all the way down to a card that supports a single specific device that
just happens to be available and use USB as it's connection method ....
..... or something in between .....
To answer Bob's questions - "how hard would it be to create a usb card
for the 2? even just a gs usb card? the reason i ask is that someone is
currently developing an atari
8bit usb card and if they can built it for that format, a gs version
shouldn't be too difficult."
A card to match the atarimax cartridge could be made. I made a simple
adapter. Other folks like Hans Franke have been looking at alternatives
for the Apple IIgs.
The most difficult aspect of a general purpose USB host adapter is as
David mentioned, the OS support and integration which would make it
useful.
The folks at microusb.org are working from the bottom up and I think
it's quite interesting to see what they have already accomplished.
