the network i have (more/less) is the lan-tech network...anyone the one that
is most complete
(besides the corvus setup which is easy to find stuff for) .the cards say
lan-tec on them
the link to what i got is below....it did not sell on ebay...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5782304524&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
no one bid on the ebay auction so i offered 70 bucks for it and 9 bucks
shipping..figured it was worth
the entertainment value to see if i could get it up and working...
the gist of what it said is below..and seems more less complete from the
ebay sale that did not fly...
quote------
The Lan-Tech network connects up to 255 Apples IIs to one Apple II and its
disks or hard drives. This works on both Apple IIe's and IIGSs running
Prodos. The Apple II, acting as the file server, needs at least 1 meg ram.
The transfer rate is 1 meg compared Appletalks 256k.Lan-Tech designed the
network for schools. This system came from ....... on 2 20 meg Sider hard
drives.
Included are: Original manual, 1 file server card, 8 expansion
(network)cards, 10 satellite (printer) cards and cables.
unquote------
anyway there are pics on the above ebay link..if you are interested
anyway bill ....
i mentioned the mastery development and digicard network because i too have
hardware for this
but no.....software to run them with...i think someone here on the newsgroup
has the mastery development
stuff..(software) and the student cards..i actually have a teacher card
(looks same pin out for cable out is diff
and color is diff..but prob just drillout the pinout for the cable to match
the teacher card..and swap an eprom
and you prob could make a student card to a teacher card)....anyway...i
forget who it was but we never guite
got that far on that..(another project).. so anyway i think? more or
less...the nutts and bolts are there to revive the mastery
development stuff...i heard of a hack somewhere i thought it was on a
newsgroup..but can't find it anymore
of how to get around the time limit on the mastery development stuff.(post
1999) but ..his name was boffo or some such..claimed
he hacked it..but i can't seem to find the printout i made of how he did
it...and of course now can't find the actual
link on the web...anyway..that one is pretty close to getting done if a
person put in some effort to track stuff down
anyway...you see a bit of that stuff pop up ..be nice to figure out a
hack/method to use those mastery development
cards i see them on ebay often...
as far as the diginet network..the hardware is even more common..but not a
whisper on the mandrake install disk
..(pre-linux was called mandrake 1st by diginet)......supposedly i got email
on how to get around the install disk if the digicard
server has the software on it..(ie..the xmas tree lights in front light up
sequentially from left to right on power up
no card needed..just power up..shows mastery development stuff is
there...also i guess
if you have a mastery development card it has a menu in the eprom that comes
up.at least the teacher card does....not sure why just putting them
both together would not give you a bootable system...but maybe it is that
simple..but maybe it is machine specific..ie
card installed w/software by mandrake..no mix/match..anyway i had no further
email reply from the guy who mentioned that trick
(former digicard guru i think with the company)..so that kinda fizzled
out..i have like 2 digicard servers..one lites up as
mentioned..and i think i have a boot up card too someplace...frustrating
because the stuff hardware wise is common...
now the network here...that i've been mouthing off about is a lan-tech
network and was noted for using siders and i think profiles in a network.
...and later versions i think (which i have somethin called Elan Aros iii
software) i think (according to
manual ) scsi hd's.. i found out that the siders ..if you did not buy them
from lantech had to have an eprom change as follows
this is what is on page 2a "elan aros iii software manual (prodos)
"users of sider drives not purchased directly from Lan-Tech will require a
replacement eprom"
Sider Drive Type: Eprom Version:
Sider 9710H LAN 3684C P2
Sider 9720H LAN 3684C P2
D2 9720H
<-- *note this is blank as in the manual..maybe this sider d2 does not need
a change?
Original 9470H ELAN/SIDER v.D4 1.0B
D4 9740H ELAN/SIDER v.3618 P2
if you do not have the eprom contact Lan-Tech...(yeah right)
In the welcome to Aros section page C-1 it states under Installing the
system..
" A hard disk or other mass storage device. Virtually any hard disk which
supports ProDos will work with the Elan Network."
so anyway that is where i get the idea you don't have to use a sider and a
regular scsi setup will do
anyway if anybody has some siders with some of these eproms we prob need to
get them copied ...just think you could setup
your grade 4 math computer lab again from back in the day..ah...MECC
software...hehehehe
anyway thats all i got on this apple ii networking stuff...the standard
corvus is easy to get setup if you find the corvus network hd
the cards are often on ebay..so that is prob the easiest thing to do for you
guys looking at this wanting to setup a network
prob a person should just contact the guy running the NadaNET setup via the
game ports etc...not sure why i'm messing with this
stuff just seems a shame to see it tossed....and then again back in the day
i used to lust after this expensive *ha not now* stuff
in the old A+/INCIDER mags etc
anyway if you have a place with these eproms or any other info from above
post here and point us in the right direction and/or
if you have some siders laying around you should check these eproms
out....because the network i have WILL i think work
with regular scsi arrangement..but needs some eproms burned (its not like i
can contact lan-tech for the eproms as the manual says)
if you want to run siders...instead..
anyway...thats where everything is at..
(by the way i barely was able to copy the disks for this network they almost
did not hack it...i about had a heart attack)
anyway...that is what i mucked with this weekend...off/on
