*There* is the problem--1kg is a very heavy minimum package.
The vast majority of packages I send out weigh less than
half a kilogram.

I 100% agree with you, this is the problem. Minimum weight has
increased while total dimensions of a package has decreased.
A way to make prices higher, increase margins, etc. If only letter
could offer security and item protection that would be perfect.
I note that the USPS's weight limit on international first class
(letters) is 3.5oz (which is the US way of saying 100g ;-), so that
option would only work for very light cards with light stiffening.

"The wastebasket is our most important design
tool--and it's seriously underused."
Gotcha, you gave me the idea to compare rates between letters and
packages. French letter rates are here:
http://www.laposte.fr/content/download/2894/24966/file/Tarifs_au_depart_de_France_Metropolitaine_a_compter_du_2_mars_2009.pdf?espace=particulier
It allows shipping items from 0,2 kg to 3 kg. The basic rate is
unbeatable but he letter is not insured and does not offer a tracking
option. If you add the two previous options to the letter (which are
included in the package rates) then we have the final order: lowest
rate for "classe économique" (aka surface mail) then letter, then
normal package rate.
The remaining issue is the item protection. I believe the one who buys
is willing to pay that extra charge to have the item protected.
Oh, no! I'm wrong. The remaining issue is the exchange rate. 1 EUR for
1.5 USD, 1 EUR for 1.58 CAD and 1 EUR for 0,90 GBP. The world is crazy
and North America has a weak money which is good for your exportations
and good for my shopping as well :-) The prices seem high for you, I
understand it now.
I may limit my future auctions to the world but North America. I won't
get any buyers there.
