I don't succeed even if I just go for the Infantry. :)
That's what I meant above :)
Ah sorry, misunderstood. I've succeeded in a few of those now - the train
one wasn't too bad - if you can remember that far back?
I completed that on on my new pilot couple of days ago. I had to take
out some
of the AA guns in order to succeed - still, it was a close call.
I think I'm too obsessive for Wings, I hate not completing a mission
properly or some other pilot taking the credit for a kill that should have
been mine (mine! Mine!! MINE!!!).
So I've started cheating.
Hmmm...I thought there was some kind of competition ongoing - should
we rearrange the rules?
Not worried, but I thought I should make it clear. :)
Anyway, after 10 missions, I'm still a 2nd Lieutenant, but I've got 12
kills.
Well, this Farrah dude is not easily impressed - I got my first
promotion
after 37th mission. Maybe with your tactic, it will come sooner.
How fast did you become Ace? I did it with three missions, don't think
it
could be done any faster.
You know that first one where the bomber attacks your base with 2
fighters. I tried and tried and tried, but I could not bring that
bar steward down before he'd bombed my base. :(
Has anyone managed it?
I did - you have to pump enough bullets into the bomber in the first
pass (when you approach it) and it will drop its bombs early, missing
the base - the problem is that your wingman strays on the line of
fire making this mission very difficult to complete. If you are cold
blooded enough just keep your aim steady and keep shooting, and
you should succeed.
If I'm unhappy with the result of a mission, I don't save, I quit the game
and reload, trying again form my old saved position, again, and again and
sometimes again. I'm still only on about the fifth mission though. :)
Oh dear... ;)
Yup, pretty poor isn't it - still I was good at Defender. :)
True :)
In my opinion as games go, its all pretty good, but I really wish they had
included even a simple throttle control so that you could dogfight with a
bit more flying skill. I mean why not?
I don't have problem with the flight model - but would like the enemy AI
to use a wider variety of manouvres in dogfight - now they usually just
try scissors - which are pretty easy to counter.
Yup, I suppose they had concerns about keeping up the framerate on a 7mhz
A500. They produced a game that is a lot of fun, but for me, its not the
legend that some people think. There are a few improvements that could
have been made easily that IMHO would have lifted the game that bit
higher.
I think they made a good compromise between simulation and action - I
think
Wings was never aimed to be a hardcore WWI flight simulation - more
like a
interactive movie that was the trademark genre of Cinemaware. Keeping
that
in mind I think they did a remarkable job. Simulation issues aside this
game IMHO offers better view to WWI fighter pilot's life than any other
"real"
flight sim in Amiga, Red Baron included.
In my last mission, I flew with a Major. Oddly, I was wondering before
I left the ground if those who outrank you ever take your kills simply
because of who they are and the fact that they can, and at the end of
the mission, I only got credit for one kill when I'm pretty certain
that I should have received credit for two. The Major certainly got
credit for a kill; I was left wondering if this was programmed into the
game to reflect some "human nature" when it comes to power and the
abuse thereof.
I've run into this, too. It is irritating at first, but believe me, when
you come up against 12 enemies with only five wingmen, you don't
really care who shoots them down... :)
I'm pretty sure it is not entirely fair. One theory I have is that you too
can abuse the system. If an enemy plane is shot down nearby, it usually
tumbles downwards, a ball of smoke and flame. Follow it down, and pump as
many rounds into it as possible, I think they still register, and if you
do it enough you will get the kill. I haven't confirmed this, but it
seemed to happen once, so I'm fairly sure.
Even if this is true, if the plane is going down already I see little
sense in
pursuing it in order snatch a kill. There is most propably plenty of
live huns
flying around you - I suggest you concentrate on them or you will be
soon
following that plane to the ground :)
The next pilot lasted just one mission :)
Ah, trying too hard perhaps - its a bit like Rally, isn't it. ;)
Actually, it is one of the design flaws the game has - if you lose a veteran
pilot you have to create a new one - with default ability levels. Should this
happen later in the game (when the game difficulty has risen and enemy
planes are more dangerous doppel-deckers) you will be in big trouble
with novice pilot.
Not good game-wise, but probably a fairly accurate portrayal of events.
True, but it gets a bit frustrating to get shot down in 10 seconds
after the dogfight has started :)
Today I started the game from the beginning - gotfrustrated
after losing too many novice pilots in a row. Also, I want to have
another go against that evil Rittmeister :)
Which mission was he in?
He appears a bit later in the game, just before your squadron is
transferred
to another base. He is one of the few enemy aces you have a chance to
fight against.
For the record, I have now clocked 30 missions now with my new pilot, 20
kills
and one medal (Military Cross), no promotion.
When you win a medal, it appears in its appropriate niche in the bottom
window. Medals and promotions are awarded based on the pilot's successes
and the mood at Wing HQ. Mood is affected by how the squadron does as a
unit. Keep this is mind next time one of your buddies sweeps in and steals
a hard-earned kill just as you were about to deliver the finishing blow.
Your attitude is wrong, Lieutenant - if I were your squadron leader you
would get a serious lesson in group work ;)
Fair comment, but you appreciate these are not my words - I'm just
quoting. :)
Mark my words, you will start to appreciate your wingmen later in the
game. Especially those who are more experienced and know how to
fight. It doesn not matter who gets the kills, but who survives :)

Seppo
